I hope this post finds everyone happy and well on their way to a great 2010. My year so far has been a busy one, between work and travel I've only just recently sat down to reflect on 2009, and think about what I want to achieve in 2010... it's a long list.
Lately there has been an undercurrent of excitement in my heart, and I've found myself happier than normal for a while now. In fact, when I first became aware of this "excitement" I thought it might be fleeting, but the feeling has stayed... I've found my head so full of ideas and inspiration I fear it might just explode. Every where I look I see objects and arrangements I want to paint, colors I want to recreate. (lots of "I" in this post ... sorry!) Here's to hoping these feelings translate to the canvas in a beautiful way! dear 2010... I love you!

Bugs and Best Friends

Hello Bug
8 x 10"
Oil on Board

I have had mixed feelings about creepy crawlers lately. There is a spider who lives above the door to my garden. Every day I have to check to be sure he is still there, safely perched above the door, and not some where on the loose. A huge Black spider on the loose in my house or porch makes me uneasy. Well I have not seen that spider in a few days... and sure enough I was at my Doctors office this morning, with some pretty HUGE bites on my leg- and stomach. I know he got me, even though I've been nice enough not to squash him, I think my "nice" streak is over.
On the other hand one of my most favorite people graduated a few weeks ago with her MASTERS in Entomology, the study of insects... so I can't hate them (or spiders) too much. (even though they love to bite me) She came to CA last weekend to visit for a few days. I wanted to introduce her to everyone like this, " Hi this is my friend Erin, and she has her Masters," and a few times I did. I am really proud of her.

A Few Landscapes

"Ravine"
8 x 24" Oil on Canvas

I have been working quite obsessively on landscapes lately. I feel like if I don't "get them out" I might forget how it felt to be there. Mostly from memory and sketches, these pieces are painted in oil over thick layers of Acrylic. Thick paint combined with thin washes and visible pencil marks are really exciting me right now, I am working on how to incorporate these ideas into my portraits. Fun stuff. These pieces are both available, please email me for purchase information. Nicole@abunnyaday.com

On my breaks from working, I am either on the phone, checking e mail, peeking in my partner's sudio or chillin with my furry kids. I will be happy when these "summer clean up" projects are over so I can get back to my regular schedule! It's so nice though, my art studio hasn't been this organized in years!!!!

A few weeks ago I posted a link to this little write up in Mt. Diablo Magazine... well a apparently I'm slow because I didn't realize I had won a "Best of the East Bay" Award, in "Nursery Decor." I am giving myself a tiny pat on the back, it's nice to be recognized for something I've worked so hard on!

Saturday!

I am so far having a productive weekend, lots of moving boxes and organizing tomorrow, aghh... hope you all are having a nice Saturday, I am off to cook... we eat dinner late around here!

Going out in SF! Thanks to my boyfriend for our pre-evening photo shoot.

Cooking!?
Skillet Corn Bread, Sweet Potato Chili and a Salad! I have been thinking about starting a cooking blog, as I prepare homemade foods almost everyday. What do you think? Are there to many foodie/cooking blogs out there already??

Happy Birthday Dad!

It was few days ago, but I am not always on time for these things..
If all goes well my Dad will be receiving a box today, via express mail, containing a complete Italian dinner, with s'mores for dessert. Let's hope the graham crackers don't get crushed! My Pops lives in Kaktovik, a small town on this Island in the Beaufort Sea, it's pretty remote, and I am hoping my box of goodies will be a real treat. This is his work. We (his kids and the rest of our family) miss you Dad, Happy Birthday!!

Update!

I returned a few days ago from a long overdue trip to upstate NY. My family resides there, and I miss them too much all the time, so going home it one of my FAVorite things to do! My pups stayed with the boyfriend who was working in the Chophouse (music studio) the whole time I was home- 7 days, the longest time away in years!!!

Letchworth State Park , Upstate NY. Positively Gorgeous! My pictures are amateur, but you get the idea!

My Big, Little brother and his girlfriend, they are a very sweet couple!

Siblings ;)

Do you see the double Rainbow?

We visited our friend's ranch in N. Cal a few weeks ago, it was heavenly...

Hiking in N. Cal, amongst the Oaks!

Making friends, with of course... dogs!

A Barred Owl, our friend rescued him.

He was a fluffy feather ball, and I wanted to take him home...

I hope you all are having a wonderful summer so far, I am excited to catch up on my favorite blogs today, and see what you all are up to! Cheers!

18 x 24" Mixed Media on Board

I want to thank everyone for their lovely comments and emails! I am releasing "Love Cows" as an 8 1/2 x 11 Archival Print, you can purchase here. It's exciting to try something different, and I am having such a great time with these new pieces. It's funny, I almost didn't share them because they were so different than my other work... we'll see where it goes!
I've been back in Northern CA now for a few weeks after 1 1/2 months in South Florida, I miss the palm trees and the afternoon thunderstorms, but it's hard to beat the summers here in SF!! Last weekend I volunteered at the ACCI Gallery in Berkeley, if you are in the area it's a must to visit. Tons of fantastic jewelry, sculptures, paintings and prints.

It was our girl Kaya's 12th birthday yesterday... it was nothing but a party!

Somewhere...

To say I had a creative day yesterday would be an understatement. To say I had one of the MOST creative days in my recent memory, would be more accurate. When I am working in the great outdoors, my paintings become these very special, precious events. When I look back on my plein air work from the past, with each piece I am reminded of the the moment in which it was created. The weather, the hot sun or cold rain, how the air smelled, the sounds that surrounded me, and all the small details that would be otherwise forgotten had I not been painting. Painting out of doors puts me in the moment, and allows me to become completely present, and it is such an amazing experience.

I would like the world to be my studio, I wonder if that is possible...

In Hopes...

... of a new painting very soon, sometimes you just have to draw.  I'd much rather paint, but I think I forgot how- hope to remember soon ;) Every few months I become obsessed with birds, and want to cover HUGE canvases with them, I then convince myself I don't have the time and move on. I feel because it keeps popping up in my frontal lobe, I need to start paying attention.  I'm going to go for a bike ride now.

A Little Sketch

I am a minimalist when it comes to setting up my palette. A warm red, yellow, & blue, a cool red, yellow & blue, and of course, white. I have done it this way most of my life, a combination of habit and it's just what's worked best for my personal taste! Whenever I do a workshop the first this I investigate is how my teacher sets up his/her palette. I find it very interesting, and I think it tells volumes about a person... a picture of my palette below...

... so the other afternoon, my BF comes home super excited and says, " I have a present for you in the front room!"  Immediately excited and curious, as I can't imagine what it might be, I open a big brown u- haul moving box.  Inside I find all of the oil colors I've never tried!!  Oh the colors, I've seen them millions of times on the shelves, but now they are patiently waiting, in my studio to be used. Honestly, I am a bit nervous.  I have no idea where to put them on my palette, but I am so excited to experiment and see what happens! Thanks BF.

Thanks to everyone who came out to support your local designers at Appel and Frank last weekend. I had a great time meeting you all, artists and attendees included! My table was set up next to Keri of Small Miracles Photography, her work is absolutely captivating, and so is she! ( I made a new friend ;)) I hope everyone's weekend was good, I feel like I inundated myself with news (as in the 24 hr news channels) so I'm taking a break from that for a few days. Back to work!

Our Families Rock!

Oh, indeed they did! They all met up with us in Cleveland last weekend to celebrate my partner being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! It was an amazing time, honoring Jason's career thus far, and being able to share it with our family and close friends was such a treat. I will have more pictures to follow, as I hardly took any myself, so Sara and Heather hook me up!

I know I was going to post this recipe last week, but time got away from me... I made this soup to accompany fish/tofu tacos. It was a nice contrast to the spicy tacos, as it has a slightly sweet flavor, let me know what you think!

Black Bean Soup

*2 cans of Black Beans, one drained, on left in juice
* 3 Tbsp olive oil
• 1 Medium Sweet Potato, chopped in small pieces
• 2 Medium Carrots, chopped
• 2 Celery Stalks, chopped
• ¼ Teaspoon of Salt
• 3 Medium garlic cloves, minced
• 1 Tablespoon ground cumin
• 1 Teaspoon ground Chile powder
• 3 Cups No-Chicken Broth
• 2 Tbsp fresh lime juice
• Cilantro
• Avocado
• Blender

Directions:

Heat Olive oil over medium heat in your soup pot, I love this one.
Add the celery, carrots, sweet potato, and salt. Cook until softened, about 15 minutes.
Add the cumin, chili powder, and garlic, cook for an additional few minutes.
Mix in the beans, including the liquid from one can, and no-chicken stock. Bring almost to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes.
Place about half soup into blender, mix until pureed, return to soup pot. Mix in limejuice.
Adjust seasonings if you like a spicier soup. (Heather ☺)
Garnish with cilantro and avocado… and sour cream if you wish! Enjoy!!

My Studio has been looking a lot like Spring lately...

                                                                                   Blue & Green Turquoise

*Candy Jade Necklace, and my first Jewelry give away! This a great piece for spring and summer, and it looks great with a simple white T! Leave me a comment, or email me your favorite thing about spring... be as simple or elaborate as you like, the 10th comment/email I receive will be the new owner of this lovely necklace!

New Jewels!

For the past few months I have been taking a jewelry fabrication class. It ended yesterday, and here are a few of the results that I'm really excited about! A Drusy Chalcedony Ring, which I am wearing right now!!! A Drusy Chalcedony Cuff Bracelet, and a Polar Bear Pendant Necklace. The Polar Bear Necklace will initially be available by pre- order only, orders will be shipped out in January. The necklace is hand cut out of Sterling Silver, finished with a lovely matte texture and strung on a adjustable silver chain. $ 170.00 Pre- order yours here. I have also been a bit obsessed with pearls lately, I think it might be Sex and the City inspired, at any rate, I've been stringing them like a mad woman. The ones above are hand knotted with purple silk.

I love this piece so very much! It has some of my favorite characters in it- funnily enough all manufactured by the same plush toy company Manhattan Toy.  Check them out, they make absolutely the most adorable stuffies!!!
Today is one of those days.  One of those Amazing days where I feel excited, happy, and so lucky to be able to spend my time creating. I am also feeling very generous- and this means a few things: I am going to be sending my little sister and sister's in- law- ( I dislike that term "in-law," they are my sisters.) a few goodies this week for being F-ing fabulous and THE BEST. I can't believe how it worked out, I couldn't have asked for a better girl for my older bro to marry, she has become one of my very best friends, and my partner's sister is super fun, and I love to be around her!!!  I also am going to be giving away Three 81/2 x 11" prints of "Pow Wow"- just be one of the first three to comment on this post, it can be anything- even just your name- and it's yours! Unfortunately I am not shipping internationally yet, so this giveaway is limited to domestic readers only.
